Neighborhood Businesses

#sunsetstrong

When San Francisco initially declared the shelter in place order, there was a catchphrase going around, “If you have to get in your car, it’s too far.” I took that order seriously and found myself walking everywhere. A silver lining around this very dark time was a real push to support our local businesses. #sunsetstrong was born in the midst of the pandemic and it has showcased the resiliency of the neighborhood we call home. It’s in this spirit that I give mention to some businesses that make my life here a little easier, healthier, sweeter, boozier, and more connected.

Health Resources

  • Raise the Bar Fitness

Jason and Nick are the dynamic duo behind this personal fitness gym. I rented office space from them for over 8 years and witnessed first hand their commitment to both their clients and the community. The trainers are extremely knowledgeable, the equipment is first rate and they foster a genuinely supportive and friendly culture.

  • Diana Oppenheim

Diana is a truly gifted teacher and teaching online is a very different beast to tackle. Her curiosity about our bodies and our world, her passion surrounding our planet and our urgent need to be good stewards, her devotion to self reflection and meditation all combine to create a yoga class that goes way way beyond yoga shapes. Her cues also make taking her classes via zoom easy. I’m not saying the class won’t be challenging; I’m saying you’ll know exactly what she’s instructing you to do.

  • Steve Coleman

When clients ask me where I go for my own tune-ups, I tell them I see Steve. I’ve been a patient of his for nearly 20 years. I’ve also studied with him as he combines bodywork with acupuncture to address injuries and pain. He’s not in the neighborhood but it’s worth the drive for me.

  • Darren Main

Darren has devoted his life to yoga well beyond the mat. Our friendship feels more like family and goes back nearly 25 years. I can confidently say he is an extraordinary teacher. He is currently creating and offering video courses on yogic philosophy and meditation, some of which are currently free.

Neighborhood Businesses

  • Wen's 123 Cleaners

Wendy and Richard provide the best wash & fold service I’ve ever used. In addition to my full time massage practice, laundry was a necessary part time job until I met Wendy and Richard. They are friendly, kind and keep a clean laundromat, provide dry cleaning service as well as alterations. I’m picky when it comes to folding and I nearly cried when I picked up my first batch of sheets to see they had matched all my sets. I appreciate them so much. Located at 1501 Taraval.

  • Rolling Out Cafe

This nondescript bakery on Taraval is a hidden gem of all the baked things. It makes total sense that a creative chemist would make an ideal baker and that would be Bruno. He left the corporate world for the love of baking with creativity. He even holds a patent for the mochissant, a mochi croissant. It’s both the story and the product that make me swoon over this small business. Located at 1722 Taraval.

  • Driftwood Bread

I ordered my first loaf of William’s bread for Thanksgiving 2019 after being assigned cheeseboard duty. He delivered this warm bread to my house which I then carried to Pacifica for dinner with friends. For the first time ever, the cheese played second fiddle to the bread. I’ve been a fan ever since and it’s been so great to witness the blossoming of this small business. You can meet him at the farmer’s market on Sundays.
